Analysis by Crapstorm

If you play the Ace first, your partner's nil will be compromised if he has two or more of KQJT97 with only one or none of 432. He will have been dealt such a hand 52.1% of the time (computed from all possible distributions).

If you play the 5 or 6 first, your partner's nil will be compromised if he has one of the following hands: (1) one or more of KQJT9 with none of 7432, or (2) two or more of KQJT9 with one of 7432. Together, these hands are 39.8% likely.

The choice is clear. By not playing the Ace on the first trick, you protect more of your partner's potential hands. It is not a sure thing, but you can maximize your odds this way. That is what the game is all about. As for whether you should play the 5D or 6D, I would suggest the 6D, because it reveals less about your hand to the opponents. They may think that you have nothing lower.
